Let's first dive into the captivating history of the Stevenson Trail, a legendary route through the wild lands of the Cevennes. Inspired by the journey of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson in 1878, this long-distance footpath offers modern adventurers total immersion in unspoilt nature and local traditions. From the gentle countryside of the Velay to the majestic peaks of the Cevennes, each stage reveals a new face of the region.
Traditionally, the trail is divided into twelve stages of around 20 km (12 miles) each. If you choose to walk the whole route from Le Puy-en-Velay to Alès, allow 12 to 14 days. We are right between Mont Lozère and the Cevennes: the ideal place to recover. Planning your walk? Read our guide Hiking the Stevenson Trail from Florac.
